Author: Dr. Raif Çavolli
Blockage of the carotid arteries in the US annually causes the deaths of more than 130,000 people, from a Kosovar perspective this number would be around 1,000. This number is not small for our country. It is therefore advisable to prevent / intervene as soon as possible, because the disease can also end in fatality.
What Causes Carotid Artery Disease?
The carotid artery narrows because of the atherosclerotic plaques, which are a result of cholesterol, calcium and fibrotic tissue. Over time, the plaque will develop even further, causing obstruction of the bloodstream to the brain that can lead to stroke. Stroke can cause paralysis but also death!
The most common risk factors for carotid artery disease are:
- Age
- Smoking
- Hypertension
- High level of lipids
- Family history of atherosclerotic disease
- Coronary diseases
- Passive life
- Diabetes
- Obesity
Symptoms of carotid artery disease are:
- Instant loss of sight
- Dizziness
- Balance loss
- Difficulty speaking - aphasia
- Confusion
- Headache
- Difficulty in swallowing
- Memory difficulties
What should you do if you have symptoms related to the narrowing of carotid arteries?
The pathology of the carotid arteries can be diagnosed by different specialists: cardiovascular surgeon, interventional or non-interventional radiologist, cardiologist etc. Diagnosis can start with a stethoscope, where noise can be heard in the area of the carotid arteries. But even in the absence of noise, the existence of carotid disease cannot be eliminated.
In addition to physical examination, an ultrasound (standard or even Doppler) should be performed. More detailed examinations can be done either with CT Angiography or MRI Angiography.
Carotid Artery Disease Treatments are:
- Changing lifestyle
- Medical treatment
- If necessary, surgical, endovascular or even classical surgery.
